Biography
Beverly Taflinger joined the School of Music and Dance staff in November 2022. As the Academic Advisor, Beverly is responsible for providing support for undergraduate SOMD students to help them develop their academic and career plans that achieve both their academic and creative success. She enjoys working with new and returning students as they navigate their undergraduate career.
Beverly is a musicologist and a classically-trained singer. She completed her PhD in Musicology with a supporting area in Vocal Performance at the University of Oregon. In her dissertation ‘What will become of my work?’: Genius, Gender, and Legacy in the Life of Clara Schumann, Beverly undertook the translation and analysis of primary sources and key secondary sources to uncover the ways in which Schumann encountered, confronted, and counteracted the gender biases embedded in the concept of “genius” and the biographical narratives that continue to gender the reception of her work. Beverly takes an interdisciplinary approach to research, considering musical issues through the lenses of social history, philosophy, literature, and feminist studies. Her work is primarily centered on music and musical culture of the long nineteenth century, and especially concerns women in music. She holds a Master of Music Performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Interdisciplinary Studies from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.
