Biography

Michael Bullis earned his Ph.D. in special education and rehabilitation from the University of Oregon in 1983. In 1994 he returned to the COE as a tenure-track associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1998. His scholarship addressed the transition of adolescents or young adults with disabilities or with extreme, high-risk behaviors to adult roles, focusing on competitive employment. He has more than 120 publications and received 36 external grant awards, roughly $22 million, to study transition issues.

Dr. Bullis served as the dean of the COE from 2005-2013. While dean, he oversaw the college’s $50+ million building project, including the renovation of the historical education complex and the construction of the HEDCO Education Building. During his time as dean, the COE was ranked in the top 10 colleges of education nationally, its faculty were ranked among the very best nationally in terms of scholarly productivity and external grant awards, and the number of tenured faculty doubled.

In 2013, Dr. Bullis returned to faculty in EMPL, teaching courses on professional writing, research methods, and administrative decision-making. He retired in the fall of 2017 remaining part-time in the department.
