Specialist in 19th- and 20th-century German literature, philosophy, and theory. Publications include Mimesis on the Move: Theodor W. Adorno’s Concept of Imitation (1990), The Idea of the Forest: German and American Perspectives on the Culture and Politics of Trees, co-edited with Kenneth S. Calhoon (1996), and numerous articles.
