Summary of Interests

Since retiring and moving to Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound, I have been working with my community in a variety of planning opportunities, from the redesign of our main street, Winslow Way, to the process for citizen involvement in our Waterfront Park redevelopment. I served on the Bainbridge Island Planning Commission from 2006 to 2017, and worked on projects including update of the Shoreline Master Program, the Comprehensive Plan and our Critical Areas Ordinance.  Founder and board member of Sustainable Bainbridge, and program director of the Bainbridge Beach Naturalists. Currently working to create stronger controls on the expansion of industrial aquaculture (shellfish operations and finfish netpens) which degrade the shoreline environment and threaten the continued existence of our native salmon runs and resident orca pods.

Past Research Interests

Sustainable community development, particularly in small island developing states in the Pacific. Through the Micronesia and South Pacific Program advanced graduate students and community professionals worked with local island counterparts to transfer skills as requested by island governments and organizations. particularly from the grass roots; design of functional work environments in the Pacific, integrating traditional and western cultural concepts.
