Statement

Dr. Matthew Mullane received his Ph.D. from Princeton University’s School of Architecture in 2019 and was a 2019-2020 postdoctoral fellow at the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University before arriving at the University of Oregon. His research focuses on the art and architecture of modern Japan in a global context. He is currently completing a book manuscript on the political and epistemological dimensions of world architecture history in Japan during the country's early twentieth century imperial expansion. In addition to work related to the monograph, he has published critical writing on architecture exhibitions, digital design technologies, the conflicted origins of the "world city," and has interviewed prominent Japanese architecture historians on developing new methods of global history.
