Mary Christina Wood is the Philip H. Knight Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the school's Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center. She teaches property law, natural resources law, public trust law, and federal Indian law; she has also taught public lands law, wildlife law, and hazardous waste law.

She is the Founding Director of the school's nationally acclaimed Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center and is Faculty Leader of the Program's Conservation Trust Project, Global Environmental Democracy Project, Native Environmental Sovereignty Project, and Food Resilience Project.

After graduating from Stanford Law School in 1987, she served as a judicial clerk on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She then practiced in the environmental/natural resources department of Perkins Coie, a Pacific Northwest law firm. In 1994 she received the University's Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching, and in 2002 she received the Orlando Hollis Faculty Teaching Award. Professor Wood is a co-author of a leading textbook on natural resources law (West, 2006), and a co-author of a textbook on public trust law (Carolina Press, 2013). Her new book, Nature's Trust, was released in October, 2013 (by Cambridge University Press).

Professor Wood has published extensively on climate crisis, natural resources, and native law issues. She originated the approach called Atmospheric Trust Litigation to hold governments worldwide accountable for reducing carbon pollution within their jurisdictions, and her research is being used in cases and petitions brought on behalf of children and youth throughout the United States and in other countries. She is a frequent speaker on global warming issues and has received national and international attention for her sovereign trust approach to global climate policy.

Brief Bio

Mary Christina Wood is a Philip H. Knight Professor of Law at the University of Oregon and the Faculty Director of the law school's nationally acclaimed Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center.  She is an award-winning professor and the co-author of leading textbooks on public trust law and natural resources law.  Her book, Nature's Trust: Environmental Law for a New Ecological Age (Cambridge University Press), sets forth a new paradigm of global ecological responsibility.  She originated the legal approach called Atmospheric Trust Litigation, now being used in cases brought on behalf of youth throughout the world, seeking to hold governments accountable to reduce carbon pollution within their jurisdictions.  She has developed a corresponding approach called Atmospheric Recovery Litigation, which would hold fossil fuel companies responsible for funding an Atmospheric Recovery Plan to draw down excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere using natural climate solutions.   Professor Wood is a frequent speaker on climate issues and has received national and international attention for her sovereign trust approach to global climate policy.

Climate Crisis Resources

The fact we must face is that Nature has delivered a mandate more fundamental than any environmental law or regulation. As the Earth nears irrevocable climate thresholds, Humanity must urgently reduce carbon pollution. Climate Crisis Resources is essential to our survival as a species. Somehow fate has delivered all of us into this pivotal moment on Earth. We did not live 100 years ago, when it was too early to even imagine the collapse upon us, and we will not be here 100 years from now when it will be too late to save what we still can. We can only claim our moment. As individuals we can choose one of two paths. We can either put our heads in the sand and pretend nothing is happening, or we can each find our own role in this crisis. Unfortunately, the sheer scope and horror of global warming causes most people to choose the former path, living life day to day as if nothing is looming in their future. The purpose of this website is to bring climate crisis to a conceptual level that ordinary citizens, lawyers, and government officials can act on. It is often said that throughout history “ordinary people have considered it their responsibility to do something extraordinary.” This time we live in calls us all to do something extraordinary–mobilize a country to save a planet.

Citizens: Becoming a Victory Speaker for Climate Defense

During times of crisis, heroes emerge. During World War II, Victory Speakers, as they were known, rallied public support for war-time efforts. Click here to learn how you can join a new age of Victory Speakers and bring change to your community one voice at a time.

For Lawyers: The Atmospheric Trust Doctrine

Governments hold natural resources in trusts for their citizens. We can use the court system to hold governments accountable for damaging irreplaceable trust assets such as the atmosphere that we all depend on for survival. Click here to explore this new approach to climate change litigation.

Government Officials: Trustees of our Natural Resources

Governments exist by a mandate from the people to protect them from collective threats. In our time there is no greater threat than global climate change, and our government must face it head on. Now is the time to make history. Click here to find out how agencies, as trustees of the people’s natural resource assets, can use their authorities to protect Nature’s assets.

Climate Crisis Resources for Citizens

There presently exists a deep gulf between what we should be doing and what we are doing. We must remember that in a system of democracy, citizens do hold the levers of government. Government will act if citizens demand it. But our leaders will not act if citizens do not demand them to. Abraham Lincoln once said, "Public sentiment is everything. With [it], nothing can fail. Without it, nothing can succeed." The heart of the problem is this: Americans seem to have lost their understanding that government is obligated to protect their natural resources. And when the public loses its sense of government responsibility… government officials quickly lose their sense of responsibility towards the public.

Climate Crisis Resources for Lawyers

The atmospheric trust doctrine provides a means by which courts can hold governments at the national and sub-national level accountable for reducing carbon emissions. Such litigation rests on the premise that all governments hold natural resources in trust for their citizens and bear the fiduciary obligation to protect such resources for future generations. While atmospheric trust litigation bears the risk of any untested strategy, it is perhaps the only macro approach that can empower courts to effectuate the reductions in emissions within the limited time frame afforded to us before critical climate thresholds are exceeded.

Climate Crisis Resources for Government Officials

Governments exist by a mandate from the people to protect them from collective threats. In our time there is no greater threat than global climate change, and our government must face it head on. The choice for government officials is now disaster prevention or disaster relief. This is a chance for officials and politicians to become true leaders, to explain clearly the nature of the threat, and to connect in Americans’ minds the need for short-term investment and regulation in order to avoid long-term calamity. (True leaders know how to do that. All other leaders must quickly learn how.)

Rob Hopkins, The Transition Handbook: From Oil Dependency to Local Resilience (Chelsea Green 2008). This book is a clearly written handbook for inspiring and guiding communities into a new sustainable future with less dependency on fossil fuels. It presents strategies for local food production, transportation, and energy independence on the local level. This is a must-read for citizens of any community seeking a resilient and sustainable future. It draws from the World War II experience of local food production and energy minimalism to show that yes, we can prepare for the new world and create a better, healthier, and more satisfying way of life as a result.
