Biography

Having grown up largely in the Southeast, Timothy Willams holds a PhD in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of Intellectual Manhood: University, Self, and Society in the Antebellum South (UNC Press, 2015) and editor (with Evan A. Kutzler) of Prison Pens: Gender Memory, and Imprisonment in the Writings of Mollie Scollay and Wash Nelson, 1863-1866 (UGA Press, 2018). His work also appears in prominent scholarly journals, including the Journal of Southern History, Journal of the Civil War Era, and Civil War History. Currently, he is writing a book about Civil War prisoners and their influence on the era's intellectual history and literature.

Professor Williams is accepting MA and PhD students in the fields of nineteenth-century U.S. history, Civil War and Reconstruction history, and American intellectual history.
