Statement

Professor Terri Warpinski has been a member of the University of Oregon faculty since 1984. She holds a BA degree from the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay, and an MA and MFA degree from the University of Iowa, and was a Fulbright Fellow to Israel in 2000-2001. Her photographically based creative practice, reflecting an expertise that bridges the span from handcrafted historical practices to digital media, explores the relationship between personal, cultural and natural histories. Helen A. Harrison of The New York Times has written of Warpinski: “She is especially attuned to the often subtle evidence of human impact on nature. . . . (Her work) invite(s) speculation about the secrets that may be revealed by close scrutiny and creative speculation.” Her work has been widely exhibited in galleries, institutions, and international festivals including such venues as the Pingyao International Festival of Photography in China; the US Embassy in Jerusalem; Houston International Fotofest; the Oregon Biennial at Portland Art Museum; Center for Photography at Woodstock; and the University of the Arts Philadelphia. Warpinski served two terms as Chair of the national board of directors for the Society for Photographic Education, held residencies at the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming, PLAYA in Summer Lake, Oregon, Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy, and ANNEX:art in Berlin. Recent awards include two Career Opportunity Grants from the Oregon Art Commission and Ford Family Foundation (2013, 2016). Warpinski was also recognized in 2015 with an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Art Commission. Recent work has been acquired by the special collections of the libraries at Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, University of Texas – San Marcos, and the University of Washington.
