Christoph Lindner, PhD (University of Edinburgh), is professor and dean of the College of Design at the University of Oregon and honorary research professor in Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam. He is an interdisciplinary urban and cultural theorist whose work spans the fields of visual culture, media arts, architecture, geography, and urban planning and design. In his research and teaching, he is particularly interested in the interrelations between cities, globalization, and issues of political ecology, sustainability, and creative practice, which he approaches from a comparative, transnational perspective.
Recent research projects have focused on topics such as the politics of urban pollution, ruin aesthetics in Detroit and Mumbai, gentrification and street art in Amsterdam, slowness in the age acceleration, Brutalist architecture and creative insurgency, and the rise of elevated parks in New York, London, and São Paulo.
Previously, he was professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam, where he launched and directed the ASCA Cities Project. From 2011 to 2016, he was founding director of the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Analysis and a founding member of the Amsterdam Center for Globalization Studies. From 2010–2014, he was director of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, a research institute and doctoral school focused on the interdisciplinary study of contemporary society, politics, and culture. In addition, he has held visiting appointments at various universities internationally, including New York University, The New School, University of California–Berkeley, University of Edinburgh, University of Freiburg, Queen Mary University of London, University of Venice, and the University of London Institute in Paris.
Dean Lindner is regularly invited to give guest classes and public lectures at architecture and design schools worldwide, and in recent years he has lectured at Parsons School of Design, Cooper Union, Pratt Institute, Brown University, Edinburgh College of Art, UCLA School of Architecture, the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London, MIT, New York University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Oxford, Aachen School of Architecture, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Geneva School of Architecture and Landscape Design, among others.
His recent book publications include Imagining New York City (Oxford University Press, 2015), as well as the edited volumes Deconstructing the High Line (Rutgers University Press, 2017), Global Garbage (Routledge, 2016), Cities Interrupted: Visual Culture and Urban Space (Bloomsbury, 2016), Inert Cities (I.B. Tauris, 2014), Paris-Amsterdam Underground (Amsterdam University Press, 2013), and Globalization, Violence, and the Visual Culture of Cities (Routledge, 2010). His latest book, The Routledge Companion to Urban Imaginaries, is forthcoming in 2019.
