Biography

Brett Kirby aims to ignite people's imaginations about what is possible so that they can be better today than yesterday. Whether it be in the field, the lab, or in the classroom, he works via a blended process of science and innovation inclusive of observing, associating, questioning, and experimenting.

Kirby currently directs the human endeavor and performance team in the Nike Sport Research Laboratory in Beaverton, Oregon where his team focuses on wholistically solving athlete problems through human performance optimization. His work aims to identify the bottlenecks on human performance, to circumnavigate these human vulnerabilities, and to apply unique methods to unmask human capability.

An applied integrative human physiologist by training, Kirby is also an adjunct instructor for the University of Oregon's Sports Product Management and Sports Product Design graduate programs, as well as an honorary fellow in the University of Exeter's sport and health sciences department. He consults and coaches professional- and recreational-level athletes, and has published more than 35 peer-reviewed scholarly articles.

Kirby received his PhD in human nioenergetics from Colorado State University and performed two postdoctoral fellowships—one in cardiology at Emory University and a second in hematology and biomedical sciences at Duke University.
